Perception: how we understand our world can be the seedbed for remorse or rejoicing. A meaningless existence that ends in non-existence is like months of gloomy days with no sun which can lead to feelings of futility. When we only perceive gloom it can lead to predictions of doom. What we have forgotten is that gloom obscures an ultimate reality that the sun continues to shine in spite of our ability to see its glow and enjoy its warmth. Paul’s exhortation to the Philippians encouraged them to rejoice by remembering the promise of the son so that they can endure the challenges of their society.
