“Are You Sure You Know What You Want” – 03/07/21

Scripture: 1 Samuel 8:1-22

Speaker:  Jeff Hill

Most people enjoy being the ruler over their own lives until their lives are threatened by someone more powerful who will make life worse.  They usually want someone to do what they can’t do or don’t want to do for themselves.

We come to the time of the last judge, Samuel, who is also a priest.  The Philistines are causing frustration to their peaceful lives. Their solution is to make a request of Samuel that is not totally out of line.  They want a king.  They want a king like the nations around them.  Samuel lets them know what that will cost them.  They don’t care, at this point in time.  They want a quick fix without counting the cost.

Why do we tend to think we need the same as those around us?  In striving for what they have, what must we let go?

See the Deuteronomy passage for the king they need.
Supplemental Readings: Deut 17:14-20; 1 Samuel 7:1-17; Matt 23:13-39
