Scripture: Deuteronomy 10:14-22
Speaker: Jeff Hill
“I’m not packing” and a demonstration of “agreement when picking”. Gestures range anywhere between meaningless to meaningful. It is said that the handshake originated to show another your hand was empty and not brandishing a weapon. Handshakes are also an indication that a price has been agreed upon between a seller and buyer of antiques (i.e. “Picking”).
In these two cases, the gesture is only as good as the trustworthiness of the two participants. I can show you my empty right hand and have a loaded left hand. Or, I could agree with a handshake but not follow through due to a duplicitous heart.
In Joshua chapter five, God calls Israel to engage in two signs that are highly meaningful in their relationship. The chapter closes with an odd conversation regarding commitment.
What signs have you participated in through which you made an agreement with God? How well are you living up to your professed commitment? Does it matter?
