30 SOUTHSIDE ORACLE October 10,
2003
The Bulletin Board
Baptized – We rejoiced at the first
worship last Sunday when Chris Wagner was baptized into Christ. May God
bless him in his Christian life.
Our Congregational Meeting
last Sunday was very well attended. There was considerable discussion of
ways in which we can more effectively bond together in the church. Brad
Stanger, our treasurer, announced that Irene Bohach, a longtime Southside
member who died in February, had made a bequest of $20,000 to the church.
As per the stipulation in her will, the money will be added to our growth
fund for future building expansion. Our thanks to Nina Miller for directing
the care of the small children during the meeting.
Southside Give-Away - This Saturday
at 9:00 a.m. is the time for our annual Give-Away. The Give-Away is a time
when donated items are given to church members and anyone in the community
who can use them. Everything is free. More things have been brought than
ever before, and many people are working every day to get them sorted.
Our Sympathy is extended to several
of our members who lost loved ones last week. Roy Webb, father of
Sandy Ondrejka, died September 30th. Bobby Valentine conducted the funeral
on Thursday. Floyd Eisner, father of Christine Saunders, died last
Saturday and the funeral was conducted in Sheboygan Tuesday. The sister of
Roger Young died in Florida last week.
W. C. Y. C. Annual Meeting –
Through our members the Southside Church plays a prominent role in the
Wisconsin Christian Youth Camp. Every year we have 35 to 40 youth and staff
involved in the operation of the youth camp sessions. One of our members,
Tim Shilts, is a member of the camp board of directors. Probably no
congregation in the state has been more deeply involved in the camp than
Southside. The annual meeting of the camp will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday,
October 18th, at the Mandrake Road Church in Madison. At that
time four members of the camp board will be chosen and camp reports will be
made. If you can work it into your schedule, plan to attend!
The Sick – After a seizure last
week, Ricky Baas was taken to Children’s Hospital. He has been released,
but more tests are indicated….Theresa Boucher had pneumonia last week and
underwent day surgery at Waukesha Hospital Tuesday.

“Grudgitis”…Killer
Disease
A grizzly bear lumbered into a clearing where
garbage had been dumped. Tourists noticed that there was only one animal
the grizzly would permit to eat with him – a skunk. Doubtless he resented
the skunk’s brazen impudence. He could easily have won a fight with the
two-tone intruder. But he didn’t. Why? Because he knew the high cost of
getting even.
Smart grizzly. Much smarter than the thousands
of humans who spend weary days and sleepless nights brooding over resentment
and inventing ways to “get even”.
Dr. S. I. McMillen says that a disordered
emotional life is a frequent cause of ulcerative colitis, toxic goiters,
high blood pressure, and scores of other diseases. If the truth were
revealed, thousands of death certificates would record that the victims died
of “grudgitis”.
Scoffers have ridiculed the advice of Jesus,
“Love your enemies.” Impractical. Idealistic. Absurd. Now psychiatrists
are recommending it as a panacea for many of men’s ills. When the Great
Physician said, “Forgive,” he prescribed good medicine not only for our
souls, but for our bodies, too.
The moment I start hating a man I become his
slave. He controls my thoughts. He hounds me wherever I go. So, the Good
Book advises, “…off with anger, rage, malice, slander…be clothed with
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and good temper – forbear and
forgive each other…” (Colossians 3:8, 12 - Moffatt).
