Pepsi Cans and
Truth
Have you heard about the new cans Pepsi is coming out
with? They are going to have the Pledge of Allegiance printed on them. So
far, so good, right? But in an effort to offend no one, Pepsi is leaving
“under God” out of the pledge. Outrageous! We should do just what the
person who told me about this suggested: boycott Pepsi.
The problem is that the above statements, which I
received by e-mail, are not true. E-mail people tend to call such
statements urban legends, practical jokes started by someone with a computer
and a phone line. I prefer to call them lies. Fortunately the internet not
only supplies the ability to spread lies quickly, but it also supplies sites
like snopes.com to help us uncover lies.
As Christians we know that we must be people of the
truth. This means speaking truthfully, but it also means discerning truth.
The world is full of lies and liars. Lies about raising children. Lies
about how to spend your money. Lies about what will make you happy. Even
lies about what is pleasing to God.
Paul wrote to the Philippians, “And this is my prayer:
that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,
so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and
blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness
that comes through Jesus Christ - to the glory and praise of God”
(Philippians 1:9-11).
Paul knew that leading the Christian life can be
challenging with all the lies of Satan surrounding us, tempting us to
abandon what is right. But with a strong love for the Lord and a greater
knowledge and insight assisted by the Spirit, we can navigate the perilous
course. So don’t believe everything you are told. Not all lies are as
harmless as the Pepsi lie.
