Southside Youth Rally – This past weekend we hosted our annual Youth
Rally. Around seventy teens registered and enjoyed lessons from Wiley
Lowe of the Holly Hill (FL) Church of Christ. The rally challenged the teens
to grow in their relationship with God as well as provided fellowship times
with other teens from around the area. Thanks to all who helped.
Congratulations especially to the teens for doing such a good job of
organizing this. The lessons were recorded so please contact me if you
are interested in copies. Also, if you would like a T-shirt from the
rally there are a few still available. His….Daryl Miller.
Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday morning. Be sure to come to
services an hour earlier.
Thirteen people assembled the Wisconsin Challenge in record time
Monday night. Our thanks to those who helped.

A Study of Baptism (4)
The Form
There has been much discussion about whether
water baptism is Biblically performed by sprinkling, pouring, or immersion.
The Greek verb form of the word rendered “baptize” in our English Bibles is
“baptidzo.” The translators of the 1611 King James Version chose to
transliterate the word rather than translate it. That means that they
retained the original Greek word and gave it an English ending. In the
New Testament the Greek word means to dip, plunge, immerse, or overwhelm.
Different Greek words are used to denote sprinkling and pouring.
The primitive practice of immersing the
candidate is seen in several passages. It is said that “John (the
Baptist) also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim because there was much water
there” (John 3:23). In fact, John immersed Jesus. “And when
Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately
from the water” (Matthew 3:16). “And when he came up out of
the water, he saw the heavens opened” (Mark 1:10). Of the conversion
of the Ethiopian we are told, “And they both went down into the
water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. And when they came
up out
of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught up Philip” (Acts 8:38, 39).
Paul tells us that the believer is “buried with him (Christ) by
baptism into death” (Romans 6:4).
Historically, it was several centuries before
sprinkling and pouring were introduced for baptism. Even today the
Eastern Orthodox Church continues to practice immersion. But, is the
form of baptism really important? If we wish to be Biblical, it is.
Baptism is a God-given ordinance. It is not our place to change it.
