The Empty Seat

The story is told about a man who won a company ticket to the Super Bowl.  He was ecstatic until he found that his seat was in the nose bleed section, actually closer to the Goodyear blimp than it was to the field.

About midway through the first quarter he saw an empty seat not ten rows from the front.  Making his way down to the seat, he asked the old man sitting next to it if anyone was going to be sitting there.  “No,” the old man said, “I bought it for my wife.  Football was one of the passions we shared in our marriage.  In fact, we have been to every Super Bowl together in the last thirty years.  But she is dead now.  You might as well sit down.”

“But,” the younger man protested, “don’t you have any close friends or family that you might have given the ticket to?”

“No,” said the old man.  “They are all at the funeral.”

We all have choices about where we will be at any given time.  Those choices are based on the priority we give to the events of our lives.  At a particular time you may choose to be at a football game or a funeral, a concert or a car wash, at work or at worship.  You may choose any one of these, but never two.  The choices you make will reflect the importance you put on them.     __Glenn Hawley, Holmes Road

                                         The Teacher

Lord, who am I to teach the way

To little children day by day,

So prone myself to go astray?

I teach them knowledge, but I know

How faint the flicker and how low

The candles of my knowledge glows.

I teach them love for all mankind

And all God’s creatures, but I find

My love comes lagging far behind.

Lord, if I still their guide must be,

Oh, let the little children see

The teacher leaning hard on thee.                          __Selected
