IRENE BOHACH
Irene Bohach, a member of Southside since her baptism in 1984,
died at the age of 92 on February 5th at the Tudor Oaks
Health Center. She had been unable to worship with us for several
years because of her frail condition. She was Ukranian by heritage,
Canadian by birth, and a naturalized American citizen. She never
married and is survived by a sister and nieces, nephews, and her
Southside family. The funeral was Saturday at the Walloch Funeral
Home with Monroe Hawley speaking and a choral group from Southside
singing.
Baptized – Maggie Mahan was baptized by her grandfather,
Tom Rucker, in West Chicago, IL on February 2nd. May God
bless her as she lives her life for Christ.
Camp Dinner and Auction – The annual W.C.Y.C. dinner and
auction will be held at Southside on Saturday beginning at 6:00 p.m.
If you have items you would like to donate for auction for the camp,
see Wayne Alexander. There is no charge for the dinner that will
precede the silent auction. Plan to come and support the camp that
has meant so much to our youth and all their families.
The Sick – Jake Ribar, father of Joel, underwent
successful surgery this week. Wanda Capitonoff’s grandfather, Eric
Harrison, is in the V.A. Hospital in poor condition.

The Lord’s Supper (7)
The Observance
In this series we have examined the Lord’s supper from different
perspectives. When all is said we must be reminded that our personal
observance of the sacred meal is not just a ritual to be fulfilled or
a duty to be performed. Though it honors God, it was designed for
us. It is a spiritual aid that requires us to look squarely at the
cross, that instrument of torture that took the life of our Lord. It
reminds us not only of the death of Jesus, but of his resurrection,
and, yes, the redemptive life that he devoted to us. It can help us
only as we blot out our surroundings and intently reflect on the
supreme price that was paid for us. Though the supper is indeed a
communion, a fellowship in which we mutually strengthen one another,
it is valueless for an individual apart from his personal worship at
that point in time.
It has often been asked if the supper should be an occasion of
sorrow or joy. Perhaps the best answer is “both.” Our human feelings
can be a mixture of the extremes. They cannot be dissected and
logically analyzed as with a scientific experiment. For us the supper
expresses a profound sadness that the Christ had to suffer and die for
us. As we eat it we suffer with him. Yet we also express boundless joy
because it reminds us that we have been redeemed from the depths of
our sin.
So, we are sad that Jesus had to suffer and die – for us! But
we also rejoice in all of the profound implications of that person and
event conveyed in the Lord’s supper. In this great observance we
truly worship God. __Monroe Hawley
