The Trinity

The telephone rang. The caller's mother had received a mail-out from the church. He was interested in knowing who we are and what we believe. Among his questions was the query, "What do you believe about the Trinity?" This question is often asked and deserves an answer.

The term "Trinity" is not found in the Scriptures. The concept is defined in the dictionary as "the union of three persons, Father. Son, and Holy Ghost, in one Godhead, or the threefold personality of the one Divine Being" (Random House College Dictionary.) I believe this view of God is correct, though I would not want to defend the view of everyone who believes in the Trinity.

The Bible clearly states that there is but one God. "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord" (6:4). "There is...one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all (Eph. 4:4-6). However, the name "God" is applied to the Father {1 Cor. 8:6}, the Son {John 1:1}, and the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3,4). There is a sense in which the three are distinct. When Jesus, the Son, was baptized, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove lighted on him, and the Father spoke from heaven (Matt. 3:16,17). All three persons or personalities were distinctively present. Since we cannot fully comprehend how three can, be in one, we must accept this by faith. The idea of the Trinity is true.                                                                                                          Monroe E. Hawley

An Unmarked Death

How can it happen that a person can die in such a lonely way and no one know? This is the question being raised in New South Wales, Australia, after Jorge Chambre died at home and no one found out - for a year. Some are saying the system didn't work. Some are saying the neighbors were not observant or didn't care. Whatever the reason, the manner of Chambre's death taps into one of our deep-seeded fears, that we are not making a difference in this life.

We all want to make a difference. These few years, given to us by God, are a gift to the world. Within them we interact with others, connect to their needs, and hopefully make things better. Above all else, we spend our years showing Christ to others through our words and deeds. When we do these things, our passing is noticed.

Life is a gift. Use it. Exhaust it. Live each day upon this earth as if were merely the preface to the book entitled Eternity.
