Making Our Message Credible

Chicago is noted for its hotly contested mayoral campaigns. Some years ago the campaign was laced with acrimony. A radio report at the time said that one politician attacked his opponent by comparing him to the Egyptian Pharaoh who had killed the babies in Bethlehem at the time Jesus was born.

Those knowledgeable in the Bible will get a good laugh out of that one because it was King Herod, not an Egyptian pharaoh, who killed the children in Bethlehem. However, aside from the humor, there is a lesson in the incident. The politician who made the charges against the opposition lost his credibility when he didn't get his facts straight. Why would anyone listen to his accusations when he is obviously wrong in what he says?

As Christians we must be sure that our message is credible.  If one makes a doctrinal point based on incorrect information from the Bible, why should others believe him? If his life does not reflect the teachings of Jesus, how can he expect others to accept his ethical claims?  And if he does not demonstrate love toward others, will not the call to follow the Prince of Peace fall on deaf ears?  Truly, the credibility of our message begins with us.

An Unmarked Death

How can it happen that a person can die in such a lonely way and no one know? This is the question being raised in New South Wales, Australia, after Jorge Chambre died at home and no one found out - for a year. Some are saying the system didn't work. Some are saying the neighbors were not observant or didn't care. Whatever the reason, the manner of Chambre's death taps into one of our deep-seated fears, that we are not making a difference in this life.

We all want to make a difference. These few years, given to us by God, are a gift to the world. Within them we interact with others, connect to their needs, and hopefully make things better. Above all else, we spend our years showing Christ to others through our words and deeds. When we do these things our passing is noticed.

Life is a gift.  Use it.  Exhaust it.  Live each day upon this earth as if it were merely the preface to the book entitled Eternity.
