The Bulletin
Board
New Adult Classes Begin Sunday. Our
Sunday morning adult Bible classes are scheduled on a trimester basis,
that is, they are taught for four months each. The classes change this
Sunday and four classes will be offered. The class on Isaiah
taught by Jeff Hill that began in January will continue for the next
four months. Several different men will co-teach a study of the
Christian graces. Challenges to our Faith will be taught by
Monroe Hawley. A fourth study designed for young adults entitled
Learning and Teaching a Biblical World View will be directed by
Chris West. If you haven't been in our adult classes, this would be a
good time to start.
Remember that the Mother- Daughter
Banquet will be Friday, May 9th at 6:30 p.m. For
additional information, contact Sandi Copass.
The annual Spring Youth Rally of
the Wisconsin Christian Youth Camp will be held at Fallhall Glen May
10-11. The information about schedule and cost is posted on the youth
bulletin board.

The congregation was introduced last
Sunday morning to Samuel Tyler Wilson of Monroe whom Southside is
financially assisting as he goes to South Africa to do mission work as
part of the AIM program. We appreciated his visit and wish him God's
blessings.
A reminder!
Quite a large number of books have been checked out of the church
library and have not been returned. A list of them is posted on the
bulletin board in the foyer. If you have one of them that you forgot to
return, there is receptacle in the foyer in which you can leave the
book.

"Are Fathers
Unnecessary?"
A few years ago the Journal Sentinel
ran an article entitled, "Are Fathers Unnecessary? Hogwash! " It
seems that the journal, American Psychologist, published by the
American Psychological Association, had carried a cover story
entitled, "Deconstructing the Essential Father. " Ms. Parker
quoted the authors as reasoning that "Fathers as we have known and loved
them are more or less obsolete" She stated that the writers weave just
enough truth into their hypothesis to distort the entire picture.
The reasoning is that (1) some studies
show that divorce isn't always bad for children, and (2) some other
studies suggest that children of divorce suffer more from life
disruption than the absence of a parent. From this they conclude that a
single-parent home is just as good as two-parent families.
Biblical teaching aside, it is clear to
every thinking person that contemporary society is going through a moral
crisis reflected in drugs, crime and juvenile delinquency. The root
cause of much of the problem is the breakdown of the home. Having two
parents in a home does not ensure that the children will not have
difficulties, as every parent knows. A lack of parental time with
children is clearly a major problem, whether children live with one or
two parents. And, as the psychologists point out, divorce is not always
bad for children, especially when alcohol and violence are a continuing
part of the children's home life.
However, ask those sons and daughters
who have not had a good father, perhaps because of death, if they do not
feel a void for having only one parent. And can we reasonably conclude,
as the authors seem to indicate, that two lesbian mothers of a son are
just as good for him as one mother and one father?
The fact is that two parents properly
performing their parental roles each have something to contribute to the
rearing of children that the other lacks. No father can give to his
children what a good mother can contribute. Conversely, there are
things that fathers put into a home, beyond the bread winning, that
cannot be done as well by the mothers. No, fathers are not obsolete.
There will never be a time in which all homes have two parents, let
alone two good parents, but a father fulfilling his proper role means
everything in the rearing of
children.
