The Pump Must
Be Primed
Along a lonely trail in a western desert a can had been wired to
an old pump. In the can was a message written with the stub of a pencil
on two sides of a sheet of wrapping paper. It said:
This
is your only chance for water along the trail. The pump is alright as
of June, 1932. I put a new sucker washer into it and it ought to last 5
years. But the washer dries out and the pump has to be primed. Under
the white rock, I buried a bottle of water, out of the sun, cork end up.
“There’s enough water in it to prime this pump – but not if you
drink some first. Pour in about one-fourth and let her soak to wet the
leather. Then pour in the rest medium fast and pump like crazy. You’ll
get water. The well never has run dry yet. Have faith.
“When you get watered up, fill the bottle and put it back like you
found it for the next feller.”
(signed)
Desert Pete
“P.S. Don’t go drinking the water up first. Prime the pump with it and
you’ll get all you can hold. And the next time you want something,
remember that life is like this pump. It has to be primed. You got to
get your heart fixed to give before you can be given to. Pete.”
