Vol. 51, No.5                 SOUTHSIDE ORACLE                             April 4, 2008

The Bulletin Board

Youth Rally Report -- Our youth rally last weekend was a huge success, both numerically and otherwise. Roger Dunnam, the featured speaker challenged the young people to make correct decisions. Many others contributed in various areas from food preparation to teaching to housing. About 130 youth and adults came from a number of congregations, more than we have had in recent years. Congratulations to all who participated in any way to make the event a success.

New Attendance Record - Largely because of our visitors for the youth rally, attendance for morning worship last Sunday was our largest ever with 342 present for the two morning worship services, exceeding the previous high of 311 on April 20, 2003. The 224 attending Sunday Bible classes was also a record.

Baptized - Jerry and Diana Kutcheid were baptized by Jeff Hill on Monday. We wish them God's richest blessings. They live at 2301 W. Carpenter Ave., Milwaukee 53221.

The Sick - Ed Dabbs is hospitalized in St Luke's South Shore Hospital with influenza .... Martha Sepulveda is in St. Francis Hospital for loss of blood... Betty Maieshafske is in the Zilber Family Hospice.

Thanks, Annette: You will note the layout on the front page. We are indebted to Annette Wagner for the new design and also for re-designing our mail-out that we send into the community. We hope to send out 20,000 of those shortly.

Arnold

The story is told of a father who took his toddler grocery shopping one day. From the beginning the boy was being a terror and he only got worse as he went along. To everyone's amazement, however, the father spoke nothing but comforting words, like, "We're halfway through, Arnold," "See, Arnold, I told you we would be finished soon. T hlouder the child cried, the softer the father spoke. When the pair finally reached the front of the line, the checker felt compelled to say something. "Sir," she said, "I have never seen a parent so calm and in control with a child like Arnold," An embarrassed grin crossed the man's face. "There is something I need to explain to you," he said. "I'm Arnold."

We all have times when we feel so much anger and frustration that we are ready to explode.  There is nothing wrong with that.  God gave us anger in a package with all other emotions.  How we deal with our anger determines whether we are right or wrong.  The Bible gives us some excellent guidelines in this regard.

Be slow – James 1:19 says, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.”  If our anger is easily touched off, we may need to ask ourselves if there are some deeper problems.

Stop and think – The first thing we want to do when we are angry is usually the wrong one.  We need to get out of the habit of acting on impulse when we are angry.  “A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.” (Proverbs 29: 11)

Defuse – As long as we harbor our anger, we have a potentially explosive situation.  That is why Paul wrote, “In your anger do not sin.  Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.” (Ephesians 4: 26).  This is the most crucial step in handling anger.  There are many ways to process anger and defuse the bomb.  It may mean taking a deep breath, it may mean counting to ten.  But somehow we need to get rid of our anger by dealing with it.  Even if it means talking to yourself in the grocery store.
