Youth Rally Report
-- Our youth rally last weekend was a huge success, both numerically and
otherwise. Roger Dunnam, the featured speaker challenged the young people to
make correct decisions. Many others contributed in various areas from food
preparation to teaching to housing. About 130 youth and adults came from a
number of congregations, more than we have had in recent years.
Congratulations to all who participated in any way to make the event a
success.

Arnold
The story is told of a
father who took his toddler grocery shopping one day. From the beginning the
boy was being a terror and he only got worse as he went along. To everyone's
amazement, however, the father spoke nothing but comforting words, like,
"We're halfway through, Arnold," "See, Arnold, I told you we would be
finished soon. T hlouder the child cried, the softer the father spoke.
When the pair finally reached the front of the line, the checker felt
compelled to say something. "Sir," she said, "I have never seen a parent so
calm and in control with a child like Arnold," An embarrassed grin crossed
the man's face. "There is something I need to explain to you," he said. "I'm
Arnold."
We all have times when
we feel so much anger and frustration that we are ready to explode. There
is nothing wrong with that. God gave us anger in a package with all other
emotions. How we deal with our anger determines whether we are right or
wrong. The Bible gives us some excellent guidelines in this
regard.
Be slow
– James 1:19 says, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and
slow to become angry.” If our anger is easily touched off, we may need to
ask ourselves if there are some deeper problems.
Stop and think
– The first thing
we want to do when we are angry is usually the wrong one. We need to get
out of the habit of acting on impulse when we are angry. “A fool gives full
vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.” (Proverbs
29: 11)
Defuse
– As long as we harbor
our anger, we have a potentially explosive situation. That is why Paul
wrote, “In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are
still angry.” (Ephesians 4: 26). This is the most crucial step in handling
anger. There are many ways to process anger and defuse the bomb. It may
mean taking a deep breath, it may mean counting to ten. But somehow we need
to get rid of our anger by dealing with it. Even if it means talking to
yourself in the grocery store.
