In Retrospect --- The year 2007 was a
year of transition for Southside. Bobby Valentine resigned as pulpit
minister effective January 1 and we were without a replacement for seven
months. Jeff Hill moved here with his family August 1 to begin fulltime
work with us. During 2007 Daryl Miller continued to shift his
responsibilities from youth work to that of family life minister and Bill
Eppler now heads a youth committee to plan teen activities. We lost two
members, Hope Zettel and Robert Shilts, Sr., by death. Eight were baptized.
In November our elders and ministers had a planning retreat in which we
decided in 2008 to focus on becoming
better servants of Christ. March 2, 2008,
will mark the 50th anniversary of the congregation and to
remember and celebrate we will have a congregational homecoming on July 11 &
12.

Authentic
Christianity (1)
With this issue we begin a study of what
constitutes authentic Christianity. Millions of people are searching for
"the real thing" in the midst of a confusion of voices in the religious
world. The average person with no knowledge of the history of the
Christian faith and with little or no understanding of the Bible feels
intimidated by the wide variety of expressions of Christianity that he sees.
Still, many people reach a crisis point in their lives in which they feel an
urgent spiritual need. How does one go about finding the truth? We will try
to answer that question in this series.
It is not our purpose to answer all the
sticky issues surrounding us as we try to determine the essence of the
religion of Jesus. We will not even address such fundamental matters as to
how one goes about becoming a Christian. Rather we want to explore the basis
on which we make our choices. Many of the differences one faces in such a
search are rooted in where one goes to find the answers. We will try to
fairly explore these different approaches for the benefit of the seeker. At
the end of the series we will explain why we have made our choice in
determining what is valid in our faith. For now, we will simply say that we
believe we must return to the original faith as it is described in the
Bible. We will tell you why later.
