Vol. 50, No.32                   SOUTHSIDE ORACLE                  October 26, 2007

Celebrating a Milestone

Sunday, March 2, 2008, will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Southside Church. On that date in 1958 about twenty members of the 35th and Cherry Church of Christ first met as a new congregation in the Knights of Pythias Hall at Swift and Squire in Cudahy. That building is now the Serbian Orthodox Church. As a congregation we want to celebrate that milestone by inviting former members to return to Milwaukee to share in that experience. Early March is a poor time for a family reunion, so we have set July 11 & 12 (Saturday and Sunday) as the time that we will have it.

We are announcing the celebration now so that former members who may return to share with us can plan their schedules accordingly. We are just starting to work on the details, but we do expect a sizeable number from out-of-state to join us. We will mail information to those away from here whose addresses we have, but we would appreciate our readers sending us addresses of other former members so that we can let them know about our reunion.

A Letter

A letter written in 250 A.D. by Cyprian of Carthage in North Africa to his friend Donatus:

"This seems a cheerful world, Donatus, when I view it from this fair garden under the shadow of these vines. But if I climb some great mountain and look over the wide lands, you know very well what I would see - brigaids on the road, pirates on the high seas, in the amphitheaters men murdering each other to please applauding crowds, under all roofs misery and selfishness. It is really a bad world. Yet, in the midst of it, I found a quiet and holy people. They have discovered a joy which is a thousand times better than any pleasure of this sinful life. They are despised and persecuted, but they care not. These people, Donatus, are Christians and I am one of them."

Comment: The names have changed and the abuses are different, but when we climb to the top of the mountain we see that mankind has not changed. Crime, murder, corruption, violence, sexual abuse are with us. We are exposed to it by newspaper, television, and the internet on a constant basis. Christians are still the leaven that should influence the world.           M.H.
