On Outlawing Slums
and Sin
Some years ago a Chicago
religious leader proposed that slums should be made illegal. This is little
bit like trying to outlaw sin. The abolition of both is highly desirable,
but they can't be eliminated by legislation. Of course, the right laws
will help reduce both, but another approach must be made to effectively deal
with these human curses.
We'll let the sociologists
handle the slums. Our concern is eliminating sin. Until fairly recently a
legislative, wall partially protected us from the excesses of immorality.
Immorality was always there and could be easily found, but at least we had
laws that coupled with the mores of society served to shield us from the
worst evil. Times have changed. Pornography, obscenity, adultery, violence,
and every other evil device of the devil are paraded in magazines, movies,
and television. We cannot avoid the raucous din of evil that has become as
commonplace as it was in pagan Greece and Rome.
This suggests that the solution
to sin can never be completely found in protective laws and customs.
Ultimately we must develop inner strength and faith to stand up for Jesus
and to resist temptation in the face of the most flagrant evil. The key is
Paul's affirmation, "I can do all things in him who strengthens me" (Phil.
4:13).
Christ will give us strength.
When we meet sin head-on the likelihood of yielding is greater, but the
dedicated Christian who overcomes will be much stronger for it all. We ought
not to pray not to be tempted, but to be able with the Lord's help to
overcome that evil.

The Hunter and the
Bear
As the hunter raised his rifle
the bear called out, "Can't we talk this over like two sober beings?" The
hunter lowered his gun. "What's to talk over?" he asked. "Well, for
instance," said the bear, coming up a little closer, "what do you want to
shoot me for?" Simple," grunted the hunter, `I want a fur coat." "All I want
is breakfast," smiled the bear. "I'm sure we can get together on this."
So the two sat down to work out
an agreement. After a while the bear got up - all alone. They had reached a
compromise. The bear had his breakfast and the hunter had on his fur coat.
There never has been any other
result in the warfare between the flesh and the spirit, when the spirit
permits any compromise with the flesh. Sin is deceitful and will always
destroy - even while putting forth a pretense of fair wards. The word of God
gives us on one possible course of action: Flee from it!"
