Allowing for
God
Ezekiel was in the middle of a
valley. Once upon a time a great battle had been fought there. So many
warriors had died that a proper burial had not been possible; as he looked
about him, all he saw were bones, dried and scattered by the sands of time.
The Lord spoke to Ezekiel and
asked what might have been a simple question: "Can these bones live again?"
It might have been a simple question coming from anyone but the Lard. Of
course these bones could never live again; they were from the bodies of
people now long dead.
But Ezekiel's response allowed
for God. Can these bones live again? "Oh Sovereign Lord, you alone know."
For Ezekiel remembered that the one asking the question was the one who
formed man's bones from the dust and breathed life into him. Can bones come
back to life? With the hand of the Lord all things are possible.
We need always to allow for God.
How easy it is to fall into the habit of assuming that we know what will
happen in any given situation. We forget that God likes to surprise us by
turning life's events upside-down and so demonstrating his power.
