Armageddon

A few years ago the asteroid movie, Armageddon, with its pending doom of the end of the world, made "Armageddon" a household word. Many people are familiar with the fact that it is a Biblical term, but don't know how it fits into God's scheme of things.

The word, found only once in the Bible in Revelation 16:16, is associated with the ancient city of Megiddo, located about ten miles southwest of Nazareth where Jesus grew to manhood. Today Megiddo is a tell, a huge mound overlooking the fertile Plain of Jezreel. In ancient times when a city was a destroyed, a new town would be built on the rubble of its predecessor. Over centuries of destruction a tell would emerge like a huge layer cake of successive occupations. Megiddo represents at least twenty-five levels of occupation beginning centuries before the Israelites came into the land. The site was James Michener's inspiration for his novel, The Source.

For centuries Megiddo was the scene of countless battles because it guarded the Via Maris, the main route between Egypt and the Mideast. Here Deborah and the Israelites were successful in battle against the Canaanites. Here Solomon built a fortified city to protect his domain. Here good King Josiah of Judah died in battle with Egypt. Megiddo became the symbol of decisive warfare.

Armageddon means the Mountains of Megiddo. In Revelation it is portrayed as the scene of a great battle at the end of time between the forces of good and evil. Some believe that John in the book of Revelation is depicting a great battle of warring armies that will literally take place there. Is this the case? To correctly answer we must understand that Revelation is written in symbolism. For example, in chapter 1 John sees a vision of seven lampstands. In interpreting the vision it is explained that the seven lampstands represent seven churches in Asia Minor. Each lampstand stood for a congregation of Christians.                The entire book uses symbols to represent other things. This makes it hard to understand because unless we can interpret the application of the symbol we have difficulty in determining the meaning.

That being the case, it does not seem to me that the Biblical Armageddon represents a literal military battle, but rather a great struggle between God on the one hand and Satan on the other. What and when that will be I do not know, but I seriously doubt that it will involve an asteroid!

Opportunity

God gives the milk, but not the pail

God gives the wood, but not the nail

God gives the seed, but not the spade

God gives the wheat, but not the blade

God gives the fish, but not the hook

God gives the food, but not the cook

God gives the horse, but not the cart

God gives the head, and hands, and heart

AND THE REST IS UP TO YOU!
