            The 10 below temperature (colder in many places) severely impacted attendance last Sunday. We have many families who drive 25 or more miles to come to worship.

            College Gift Boxes - We send gift boxes to our college students who are away from home. This month's recipients will be Tim Williams and Bethany Stanger, both students at York College. To contribute see the list of items on the table in the foyer and choose something to leave in the boxes provided. Suzanne Roberts is heading up this program.

            Praise and Palate will be Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Bring Mexican food for the palate part.

            Men's Breakfast - This area-wide event will be Saturday, February 24th, at 9:00 a. m. We usually have men and bays from about a dozen sister congregations in attendance. Be sure to sign-up on the posted sheet if you plan to come so we can know how many to prepare for.

Suzanne Roberts will have a cochlear implant on February 28th. If successful it will restore at least part of her hearing. Remember her in your prayers.

Mark your calendar for the Hearts and Minds Seminar on Saturday, March 31st from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will be conducted by John Alan Turner on the theme of "Raising Your Child With a Christian View of the World." Invite your friends to share with us in this study of parenting.

The Use of Words

A careless word may kindle strife;

A cruel word may wreck a life.

A bitter word may hate instill;

A brutal word may smite or kill.

A gracious word may smooth the way;

A joyous word may light the day.

A timely word may lessen stress;

A loving word may heal and bless.

What Is the Bible?

(This is the first of a series about the Bible)

The most widely distributed book in the world is the Bible. It has been translated into hundreds of languages, and has had a profound influence wherever it has gone.

Actually, the Bible (which means "book") is not a single book, but a compilation of sixty-six different writings. These books are found in two major divisions - the Old Testament (which is also the Jewish Bible) and the New Testament. The Old Testament is about three times as long as the New.

These books profess to be from God, though they were written and compiled by at least forty authors. They were written over a 1600 year period. Most of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, except parts of Ezra and Daniel that were penned in the related Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke. The New Testament books were written in Greek, the common language of the day. For us to have the Bible in English, it had to be translated. Many English translations have been made:

What is the Bible? Christians believe it is the Word of God conveyed to us in inspired writings of men. In future articles we will consider how we got the Bible and what it means to us.
