Which Way Are You Going?

The church of Jesus is comprised of people in varying spiritual conditions. There is the elderly Christian who through years of effort has gotten the business of living for Christ to a state that others admire. There is the new convert, full of zeal, but struggling against the lust of the flesh. In between are most of the rest of us, sadly imperfect in our efforts to live the holy life, yet daily striving to follow the perfect example of Jesus.

An elderly preacher once advised me, "I have learned that you must take people where you find them and work from there." His counsel has helped me immensely.

We must learn to accept people for what they are and not what we wish they would be. Some have much farther to go than others, but we all walk the same spiritual road.

"Encourage the fainthearted" Paul admonishes us. We have a mutual obligation to "bear one another's burdens" as we encounter life's daily problems. We do not travel the pathway to heaven alone.

God is not so much concerned about where we are as the direction we are going. Are you struggling forward or sliding backwards? The young Christian who is really trying, but having a hard time, will receive the divine help he needs. The danger comes when we stop trying and start drifting. One may have attained a higher plane of excellence than another who daily wrestles with the lust of the flesh. But if the former is drifting backwards he is worse off than the latter who will eventually pass him if their attitudes don't change. What way are you going, my fellow Christian? __Monroe Hawley
