There will be an inter-congregational
picnic for congregations in the Milwaukee area on August 19 beginning at
11:00 a.m. at Kletzsch Park. Plan to attend if you can. Conflicting
activities will keep some that usually go from participating so we need
those who are able to attend if possible.
Remember the Labor
Day Encampment at Fallhall Glen September i-4. If you are interested in
going, see Wayne Alexander.
Joel Ribar is
collecting children's shoes to be sent to those in need in Jamaica,
If you have shoes that are new or slightly used, but in goad shape,
put them in the box provided in the foyer and Joel will see that they are
put to good use.
Our thanks to all
tweens (and adults) who helped in the free car wash in the church
parking lot last Saturday.

Face, They Call It
Forty years ago, our
nation was involved in a war it didn't know haw to get out of Public
consensus said that the country should never have gotten involved in
Vietnam. The war dragged on after it was clear that to continue the conflict
would only prolong the misery. After all the platitudes about principles and
national interest, the United States continued the struggle for only one
reason. Face, they call it. Every nation feels it must preserve its image. A
government will lie, equivocate, or compromise to save face before other
nations, Has it ever occurred to you that most of us are like the nations of
the world in this respect? Perhaps this should be expected because people
make up governments.
Call it self-esteem,
if you please. Face is another name for pride - a respectable sin that can
be part of a Christian's life without incurring censure. But James
classifies it with murder and adultery (Mark 7:21,22).
Pride causes us to
show off, to. push ourselves ahead when we ought to take a hack
seat, to toot our own horn when we ought to let another do the tooting.
Pride keeps us from "associating with people of low position" (Romans 12:16)
who have not attained our degree of culture, education, or influence.
Pride prevents us from
admitting mistakes. Like the nations of the world, we may be unwilling to
admit that we have erred and should change our course of action. We continue
down a blind alley in the name of determination or persistence! The correct
word is stubbornness, the root of which is the refusal to admit error and
lose face.
Pride prevents us from
straightening out our personal conflicts. When we do, we must share blame,
admit mistakes, and ask forgiveness as well as grant it. This causes us to
lose face. We overlook the fact that we respect those who are willing to
face up to their mistakes.
Let us not forget that
our Savior lost face as well as his life - for us! We should have the mind
of Christ and once we learn to think as he does, we will realize that face
is but empty vanity; unworthy of the name of Jesus.
