Dominican Republic
Service Trip Report
Last week a group of
twelve people from Southside returned from the Dominican Republic where we
spent a week doing service projects and sharing the good news of Jesus with
the Dominican people. During this time we poured a cement floor, painted two
homes, applied tin to two roofs, conducted two two-hour long vacation Bible
schools, prayed for the sick in a hospital, played with orphans, and fed the
poor. In addition, we experienced the Dominican culture, had nightly
devotionals, tried many different foods, and enjoyed the beautiful
landscape. While we stayed in a rustic compound near the small village of
Bobita, the work also took place in Puerto Plata, Rio San Juan, and with a
village near the mountain, El Moritto. During the week several people that
the group had contact with asked about becoming Christians and the
missionaries that live there will follow up with them. Also, on the last
night in the country Dustin Dickson as well as an eleven year old Dominican
boy were baptized in the ocean. A special thanks to everyone who contributed
financially to this trip as well as those who gave items that were taken to
the missionaries. Pictures are posted in the church foyer and an the church
web-site (www.sside-church.org). Please keep this mission effort in
your prayers. __Daryl Miller
Rough Treatment
Some men were once
repairing high-tension lines after a storm. The new poles they were using
were "green" and thus able to conduct electricity.
While working in the
rain, they hoisted a support where it could be dropped into the hole dug for
it. Trying to be helpful, one man thoughtlessly seized the end in order to
guide it.
Suddenly one of the
workers made a run for him and knocked him sprawling. He arose from the
sloppy street - muddy and ready for a fight. But his attacker pointed aloft
to where the damp wooden shaft had contacted the power line carrying 33,000
volts of electricity.
Said the rescued man,
"Had my friend not taken such quick action, I would have been a goner. Yes,
Slim saved my life, but he had to knock me over to do it." So, too, the Lord
often has to strike down sinners, as he did Saul, to get them to listen to
his voice. __Pulpit Helps
