Vol. 49, No. 2 SOUTHSIDE
ORACLE March 10, 2006
The Bulletin Board
The Southside Area-Wide Men's Breakfast will be
at 9:00 a.m. this Saturday. We often exceed a hundred in attendance. Our
speaker this year will be Barry Gainey who preaches for the Hampton Avenue
Church in Milwaukee. We encourage all our men and boys to attend.
The Sweetheart Dinner last Saturday was
attended by twenty couples. Our thanks to Jim and Lori Nichols and the teens
for facilitating this so well.
The Southside Youth Rally will be Friday, March
17th through Sunday, March 19th. Wiley Lowe of the
Holly Hill Church of Christ in Holly Hill, FL will be the featured speaker.
Wiley has served as youth director for that church for 19 years and is back
by popular demand. He was with us for our rallies in 2001 and 2003. You can
help by signing up to assist in food and housing. See the posted
announcements or talk with Daryl Miller about how you can help.
The next Christian Workers’ Meeting will be at
9:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 21st. The presentations will address
the question of Christian unity, especially in the churches in the heritage
of the Restoration Movement. Because of the subject, a large turnout is
expected from a number of congregations. Plan to attend if you can.

The Mark of a
Christian
In his History of the Great Reformation of the
Sixteenth Century, D’Aubigne makes an observation about the changed
attitude among Christians in the centuries after the apostolic age:
“In the beginning of the gospel, whosoever had
received the spirit of Jesus Christ was esteemed a member of the church: -
now the order was inverted, and no one, unless a member of the church, was
counted to have received the spirit of Jesus Christ” (v. 1, p 21).
In the Biblical sense the church is the family of God.
Only those with the spirit of Christ can be in that family. Emphasis in the
Bible is on having that spirit. Membership in the body is the outgrowth of
that fact.
Today as well, one can be considered religious with
having a trace of the spirit of Jesus. Religion is kept in one pocket,
morality in another, and “never the twain shall meet.” To be a church member
is prim facie evidence that one has the spirit of Christ. Yet, though the
external forms of the Christian faith are necessary, they do not necessarily
imply that inwardly one is a child of God. Yes, the church is vital, bit it
is more important to have one’s name of the “roll up yonder” than on a
church register down here. __ Monroe E. Hawley
