Wood Tag
When I was a boy we
played Wood Tag. It was one of those games that children sometimes still
play, though often with variations and different names. I wore out more than
one pair of shoes playing "kick the can." The rules of Wood Tag called for
the one who was "it" to tag the others as they ran from one tree to another.
So long as you were touching wood, "it" could not get you out. As we dashed
from tree to tree we dared "it" to catch us, confident in our ability to
elude him.
Wood Tag reminds me of
Peter's warning to his fellow believers shortly before the martyr's death.
"Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so
that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from
your secure position" (2 Peter 3:17 - N.I.V.) In his letter the apostle was
addressing the danger of Christians compromising their attachment to Christ.
He was telling them that so long as we are secure in our relationship with
God, we are safe and "it", namely Satan, cannot catch us.
But why would anyone
want to leave the secure position guaranteed by Christ? Isn't it because we
want to get as close to sin as we can without getting caught? We dare Satan
to catch us, confident in our ability to avoid his clutches. There is a
certain exhilaration found in walking that fine line between good and evil,
certain that we can overcome temptation and avoid the clutches of the evil
one. The alcoholic may assure himself that by taking that first drink he
will not revert to his old ways, only to discover that he has been "caught"
by Satan. Don't take a chance! As God's child you have a secure position
when you rely on him instead of daring Satan to catch you.
