What God Hath
Promised
God hath not promised
skies always blue,
Flower-strewn pathways
all our lives through.
God hath not promised
sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow,
peace without pain.
But God hath promised
strength for the day,
Rest for the labor,
light for the way,
Grace for the trials,
help from above,
Unfailing sympathy,
undying love.
Making Choices
"Better a day in
your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the
house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked." Psalm 84:10
The Psalmist had made a choice.
Life is filled with choices. Some are important, others not. Choosing a life
occupation is more significant than selecting a restaurant. Our important
decisions reflect our interests and values. A person may choose to enter
politics because he views it as a means to power and prestige. Another may
select medicine as a life vocation because of his desire to help people. Of
course, not everyone chooses politics or medicine for these reasons. The
politician might be motivated by a true sense of public service while the
doctor might simply see his occupation as an avenue to the good life.
The Psalmist presents us with two
starkly clashing worldviews. Those who would "dwell in the tents of the
wicked" adopt lifestyles of self-gratification, regardless of their effect
on others or their relationship with God. Pleasure is the ultimate goal. The
temple doorkeepers have God-centered lives that render service to Him and to
the welfare of others. The first gives instant pleasure but ends in despair.
The second loses self in the service of God, but culminates in happiness
borne out of a purpose filled life and an assurance that one is right with
God. Which is your choice?
