Hurricane Relief Report

As announced last week, our entire contribution last Sunday was given to the relief of victims of Hurricane Katrina. The response was overwhelming. The contribution was $13,076.72, probably our largest single Sunday contribution ever. Additionally, our Hispanic brethren, who meet Sunday evenings at Southside, gave about $400.00 to this relief effort. Though these brethren are just starting, they are to be commended for their concern for the needy. The funds will be dispensed by "The Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Fund" in Nashville, TN. They are especially well qualified and experienced in disaster relief and will be effective administrators of our gifts. In last week's Oracle we also mentioned that we were helping one of the New Orleans' victims to relocate from a Louisiana hospital to her daughter's home in Milwaukee. We are happy to report that Barbara Johnson is now safely here. Much credit goes to the Holmes Road Church in Memphis, TN where Glenn Hawley preaches, for making the difficult transportation arrangements.

The Value of Practice

During wartime a soldier was court-martialed for treason. At his trial he was asked, `Do you deny that you slipped into the woods after taps a few nights ago?" "No, I don't, I went," he admitted.

"And didn't you collaborate with the enemy?" "No, sir." "You didn't? Why would you have a reason for going there at that hour?" exclaimed the officer. "I stole away to pray," the soldier calmly stated. "To pray?" bellowed the incredulous commander. "Do you pray often?" "Oh, yes, sir, I seek a place alone each day in order to talk with God."

"I don't believe you!" snarled the officer, "but I'11 give you a chance to prove your claim. Fall on your knees right now. Let us hear you pray for your life!"

The soldier knelt and began petitioning fervently. As he continued the skepticism vanished from the faces of the men of the court. After a few minutes the presiding officer said kindly, "On your feet, soldier. We believe your story. If you had not spent so much time in drill in the past, you would never have done so well in review. Case dismissed."    Selected
