Trust
Me!
Have
you noticed the rash of television commercials that ask the viewers to trust
them? One features a lawyer who says at the end, “You can take my word for
it.” Now, I know nothing of the attorney or his legal firm. Perhaps he is
the image of integrity. On the other hand, the legal profession has not
distinguished itself as especially trustworthy. So I must respond to the
attorney, “Just why should I take your word for it? You haven’t established
your honesty by what you say. I have no reason to take your word for it
anymore than I take the word of most other commercials.
Sometimes when marriages are in trouble because of the infidelity of one of
the partners, the offender implores the offended, “I won’t do it again.
Just trust me!” When the one who has been hurt declines to extend that
trust, the other cannot understand why the request is denied.
Trust must be earned. I do not trust another just because he asks me to. I
trust him because I have reason to believe he can be trusted. My trust may
be based on personal experience or the commendation of another person. One
of the most difficult things to recover in a strained relationship is trust
that has been betrayed. It can be done! If one has forfeited a trust and
is truly repentant, it is right for him to seek another chance to prove
himself and the other person should give him that opportunity. But that
trust should not be automatically expected until one has first shown by his
actions that his ways have changed.
The
application of the principles of Jesus is the surest way to gain the
confidence of our fellow human beings. A marriage in which both partners
subscribe to Biblical teachings should not be threatened by fear of
infidelity since both partners accept the trust relationship as a given.
To
the lawyer and all others who ask us to take their word for it I say, “We
get our trust the old-fashioned way; we earn it.”
