10 SOUTHSIDE ORACLE May
6, 2005
The Bulletin Board
The
“Does God Exist” seminar by John Clayton last weekend was a great
success. The Friday and Saturday night lectures at Greenfield High School
were well attended with a number of community visitors present. About fifty
were present for the youth program Saturday afternoon. Then John Clayton
taught the combined youth/adult class Sunday morning and preached at both
morning worship services. Our thanks to John for the information and
inspiration he gave us all.
New Adult Classes – This Sunday we begin three new Sunday morning
adult classes. They are:
The
Book of Joshua, taught by Bobby Valentine in fellowship room.
The
Psalms, taught by Monroe Hawley in annex basement.
The
Gospel of Matthew, a continuation of the present study taught by Wayne
Alexander in the auditorium.
The
Mother/Daughter Banquet is Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. .

The Hunter and the
Bear
As
the hunter raised his rifle, the bear called out, “Can’t we talk this over
like two sober human beings?” The hunter lowered his gun. “What’s to talk
over?” “Well, for instance,” said the bear coming closer. “What do you
want to shoot me for?” “Simple,” said the hunter, “I want a fur coat.”
“All I want is breakfast,” said the bear. “I’m sure we can get together on
this.” So they sat down to work out an agreement.
After awhile the bear got up alone. They reached a compromise. The bear
got his breakfast and the hunter had a fur coat. Sin is always like this –
always deceptive and will destroy. Never compromise. Flee!

Alter Your
Direction!
A
newly commissioned navy captain took great pride in his first assignment to
be in command of a battleship. One stormy night the captain saw a light
moving steadily in their direction. He ordered the signalman to send the
following message: “Change your course ten degrees to the south.” The reply
came back: “Change your course ten degrees to the north.”
The
captain was determined not to give way to another vessel, and so he sent a
counter message: “Alter your direction. I am the captain.” The message
flashed back promptly: “Alter your direction. I am the lighthouse.”
There are times when all of us have to identify with the captain, times when
we allow self-will to set us off on a collision course. “I have my rights,”
we say, determined to have our own way. But God, whose Word is like a
lighthouse with a penetrating and unchangeable beacon, reveals a rocky shore
ahead and finally we do as the captain surely did. We obey.
Our
prayer for ourselves, and for the church, should be as Jesus prayed, “Not my
will, but thine be
done.”
