Feelers and Doers
The two sisters were different. Mary was a
feeler. Martha was a doer. It was as a feeler that Mary sat at the feet of
Jesus as he taught while Martha, as a doer, spent her time in the kitchen
preparing the meal for the honored guest. You remember the story – Jesus
had been invited to dinner at the home of the two sisters and their brother
Lazarus. Martha, distracted by the preparations that had to be made,
complained to Jesus that Mary needed to be helping her. Jesus, in response,
commended Mary because she had sought the better part (Luke 10:38-42).
We are born with different personalities. Some are
more emotional (the feelers) while others are more practical (the doers).
These characteristics will always be with us, though we all, to some degree
have both qualities. Neither personality is inherently better than the
other. Ideally the feeler may need to grasp more fully the servanthood of
Martha who exemplified the teaching of Jesus that the greatest among us is
the servant of all. The doer, on the other hand, may need to ask himself
whether his “doing” has become a substitute for his devotion.
A highly dedicated Christian once confided to me
that she did not feel as spiritual as she thought she should feel. I must
confess as a fellow doer that I sometimes share that feeling when I become
preoccupied with details of the Lord’s work and lose my spiritual focus on
Jesus. However, we all need to learn that true spirituality is found in our
total relationship with our Lord, not simply in the emotional outpouring of
the heart that prompted Mary to pour oil on the feet of Jesus. True
spirituality is expressed in different ways. We need both Mary and Martha.

“On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus
stood and said in a loud voice, ‘If a man is thirsty, let him come to me and
drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living
water will flow from within him.’” John 7:37,38
