Tuned In To God
As I
lay in bed that morning before sunrise I heard the singing of robins who
often make their music before most of us get up. It occurred to me that the
one who is so familiar with this beloved bird may not even know his song.
But to the birdwatcher the robin’s song is as familiar as any song because
he is tuned in to its call. A birdwatcher involved in other pursuits will
pick up the song of the chickadee or flicker when most people won’t even
hear the bird sing.
That’s life. We hear what we are tuned in to. Mother hears a baby’s cry
while other family members sleep on. The phone awakens the husband when it
does not the wife. Our senses reflect our interests and often our values.
Paul
once wrote, “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are
perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1
Corinthians 1:18). The dedicated disciple of Jesus is tuned in to the
Lord. The one who cares little about spiritual matters is unconcerned about
what God has to say. If we expect to receive divine blessings we must pay
enough attention to him to talk to him in prayer and to listen to his
message from the Scriptures. God can’t help you if you are not tuned in to
Him. __Monroe E. Hawley
False Alarm
A
teacher saw a group of children kneeling in the corner of the playground.
She immediately reported their activity to the principal. The principal
called the children into his office and requested an explanation. “Playing
stud poker,” they replied. “Oh, thank goodness,” sighed the teacher. “We
thought you were praying.”
Most
of these kinds of problems stem from thinking separation of church and state
means separation of God and government. You can separate church and state
without letting the government make anti-God decisions and the church meddle
in political elections. __Pulpit Helps
