Youth Rally Report – “A special thanks to all who helped make this
year’s youth rally go so smoothly. There were 60–70 teens from ten
congregations in attendance. We enjoyed lessons by Josh Cleveland from the
Woodbury, MN church in the Twin Cities. Activities included Bible classes
taught by Southside members, ice skating, wonderful food, and worshiping
together while Bruce Konves shared his gift of painting. We still have a
number of this year’s youth rally T-shirts available for $7.00 as well as
some from previous years at $2.00. Please see me if you are interested.
Thanks again to the entire congregation for your help.” __Daryl Miller
Men’s Retreat – The annual Southside men’s retreat will again be held at
Camp Matawa near Campbellsport on March 15 & 16. The theme will be “The
Measure of a Man” and will be led by men of our congregation. If you can
go, sign up on the men’s bulletin board. For questions contact Dale
Ketterhagen.
Kevin and Laura Mahan will be leaving for China on March 31st to adopt a
little girl, Samantha Xiao Dan, and will return on April 13th. For
additional information see the note on the web at

The Heart of a
Servant
Jesus took a towel and a wash basin and began to wash the feet of his
disciples. It was a strange sight – the master in a serving position.
Quietly without a word, Jesus moves from one man to another. They probably
twisted and turned uncomfortably. They know he is the Messiah – the Lord,
and Lords do not wash feet; servants wash feet. Jesus even washed Judas’
feet because he had the heart of a servant. Peter protested, but Jesus
still washed his feet. In Jesus we see the difference in serving and having
the heart of a servant. A servant may have washed the feet of the eleven,
but only a person with the heart of a servant would have washed the feet of
all twelve. If one serves only his friends or only when it profits him, he
does not have the heart of a servant.
John
13:1-15 gives us some insights into why Jesus could have the heart of a
servant. He was secure in his relationship to his Father (vs. 1,3). God
had given all things into his hands. He knew he had come from God and would
be going back to him. Some folks need to “Lord it over others” because of
insecurity. Jesus accepted the role given him by his father and he was
ready to obey. Some folks can’t accept things as they are and are always
fighting. Servanthood does not threaten a secure person as it does an
insecure one. Jesus had the heart of a servant because of a sincere love
for people. We find it easier to have the heart of a servant toward those
we love than toward others.
People followed Jesus. When one truly has the heart of a servant, people
are attracted and find it easier to listen to him and trust him.
There are only servant-roles in the church. May our God help us not only to
be servants, but also to have servant hearts!
