Small Group Report
– Franklin-Milwaukee/Turmans
Our
small group meets on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. We rotate between the
homes of the four families that participate in the weekly Bible studies.
The four families that attend are the Turmans, Hanyards, Beans, and
Threats. We switch between studying an entire book and a specific topic.
Our
study begins and ends in prayer. All lessons come directly and exclusively
from the Bible. Everyone gets an opportunity to read scripture and expound
on the verses they read. Brothers Jerome Turman and Thomas Hanyard
alternate in leading the Bible study. After studying we fellowship and
occasionally watch movies. As a group we visit the sick and elderly and we
are scheduling activities like bowling, Great America and Bucks/Brewers
games. Please feel free to attend. We would love to have you join us. For
information about the location of the next study please call Jerome Turman
at (414) 427-9744.

Authentic
While my family was on vacation we went to the Prairie Rose Ranch in Kansas
where we enjoyed an “authentic” cowboy chuck wagon dinner served by
authentic cowboys. Of course, the dinner of beef brisket, sausage, and
beans is served on Styrofoam plates. And the cowboys may ride horses, but
they are not above using pickup trucks as well. All of which calls into
question the word “authentic”.
We
claim to practice “authentic” Christianity, patterning ourselves after the
first century church, but what exactly does that mean? After all, we don’t
wear togas. We sit in padded pews and use microphones in worship. We use
the airwaves to proclaim the message of the gospel. Does this mean we do
not practice “authentic” first century Christianity? Not at all.
The
heart of Christianity is not its outward forms, but its life transforming
story and teachings. We have the same message about Christ that the early
church taught. We practice the same baptism. We sing praises to the same
Lord. We pattern our lives after the same perfect ideal. We look to the
same future. Many of the forms of our teachings and worship have changed,
but the heart of the gospel has not. I believe we still practice authentic
Christianity.
By
the way, the next time you go to Kansas, go see some authentic cowboys.
