The Element of Love
Not
long ago a man approached me in a public building. He was an old friend
whose path I had not crossed for a long time. I was really glad to see him
and was eager to hear about his family.
We
never found any time to visit. He began immediately a jutting-jaw
discussion of matters religious, and did not stop until we were compelled to
part. It happened that I was somewhat in accord, at least in principle,
with that which he was saying. The insistence of the attack, however, and a
certain antagonism of spirit, aroused within me all the stubbornness of my
nature. I found it difficult to keep from taking the opposite position and
thereby arguing against the very thing I believed.
This
little incident encouraged me to consider again how necessary it is for the
Christian life to be exercised in the element of love. We have this
teaching throughout God’s word, but often pay very little attention to it.
We are seemingly more interested in the abstractions of theological
discussion than in the underlying principles that give meaning to our
protestations.
For
a fish to live there must be water in which he may stay. For a man to exist
there must be air to breathe. These are the natural spheres, or elements,
for life. And so, also, for the Christian. He can live only in the element
of love. Outside of that sphere there is certain death.

Small Group Report-
Young Adults
The Young Adults Bible Study is currently
meeting at the church building on the odd Thursdays of the month (1st,
3rd, and 5th - as applicable) at 7:00 p.m. We are
finishing a survey of the book of Ezekiel. Starting January 6th we will be
studying the Kingdom Parables of Jesus. Currently we have a small number of
regulars (three to be exact) and are always open to more. This study group
began originally at the church building almost two years ago. We moved to
my house in May, 2003, where we met until returning to the building this
October. Currently J. R. Frost is the facilitator (at least until the
current survey concludes). We are open to new members and would enjoy the
chance to share our group with you. If you will not be joining us for
study, we appreciate your prayers for our group and members. If you have
any questions, please do not hesitate to call J. R. __J. R.
