On Being Prejudiced
(2)
The Corinthian church was beset with moral
problems within the body. Paul wrote the congregation, “What business is it
of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those
inside?” (1 Corinthians 5:12). How do we reconcile the seeming paradox of
the duty of the church to judge its members with the admonition of Jesus,
“Do not judge” (Matthew 7:1)?
The answer is that we are dealing with two distinct
issues. Paul is telling the Corinthians that they should hold one another
morally accountable. Jesus, on the other hand, is warning against drawing
conclusions without evidence. We call it prejudice.
Prejudice is directed against people, not things.
Based on personal experience one may dislike a food, an appliance, or a
car. That is experience, not prejudice. Prejudice is disapproval of people
based on ethnicity, race, gender, education, culture, or physical
appearance. In many cases the only thing that elicits criticism is that
“they are different.” Jesus accepted people from all strata of life and so
must we.
Disapproval and prejudice are not identical. One may
disapprove of a person’s open homosexual lifestyle without pre-judging him,
but to accuse one of being gay without evidence is prejudicial. In our
“anything goes” society all criticism based on ethical values is often
regarded as prejudicial and intolerant. As Christians we must not hesitate
to oppose things that we believe are morally sinful, but our criticism must
be directed against the wrong, not the person.
