On Being Prejudiced
(1)
The wedding I was performing was unusual.
Many of the male attendees wore leather jackets (one with a pearl handle
revolver protruding) and some of the girls had butterflies on their right
shoulders. A large number of motorcycles were parked in front of the church
building. At that time the members of a local motorcycle gang were being
charged with criminal activity. Harleys didn’t enjoy the popularity they do
now.
In my mind I framed a mental picture of a
group of individuals walking on the outskirts of the law, though I had no
direct evidence of their affiliation. After the wedding the guests were
throwing rice at the bridal couple. As I stood next to one of the groomsmen
he remarked, “I don’t believe in throwing rice.” When I inquired why he felt
that way he replied, “There are so many hungry people in the world, and we
shouldn’t be throwing food away.” I could have argued that the rice would
never have found its way to India, but I instantly recognized that I was
talking to a sensitive, compassionate soul. I had negatively judged him and
his associates because they were apparently members of a motorcycle gang.
We all must cope with prejudice. To be
prejudiced is to “pre-judge”, to form mental conclusions without knowing all
the facts. This is what Jesus meant when he said, “Do not judge, or you too
will be judged (Matthew 7:1). Of necessity we must make evaluations of
other people, but let us be careful not to do so until all the facts are
in.”
