True Empathy
I’ve had a little trouble with an upper
molar lately and am scheduled to have the problem taken care of shortly. My
tooth doesn’t bother me all of the time, but when it does I’ve noticed that
one of the teeth in my lower jaw may ache along with it. I don’t know the
explanation a dentist would give, but I do know that there is some kind of
sympathetic relationship between the two teeth.
Paul wrote of the human body, “If one
member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice
together” (1 Corinthians 12:26). His application is to the spiritual body
of Christ. If one Christian suffers, all share in the trauma. If one
rejoices, all are happy.
Is this true of you, Christian friend? Do
you feel, not for, but with your brother in Christ? Is your
sensitivity such that you feel your brother’s heartbeat? The feeling that
one shares with a fellow child of God ought not to be detached sympathy, but
an abiding care so evident that the other disciple knows that he is truly
loved. How true are the words of the hymn:
“When each can feel his brother’s sigh
And with him bear a part;
When sorrow flows from eye to eye,
And joy from heart to heart.”
