Discouraged?
Discouragement is one of those difficult things to explain and almost an
impossible thing to handle. Nations have fallen, teams have gone down to
defeat, and churches have been back-set by discouragement.
Discouragement acts on the individual, but is often passed on to others by
contagion. It is a destroyer and must be handled with care. There are
several points about discouragement that we need to note.
Discouragement saps the energy from an individual or a group. It takes
away incentive. It causes men and women to become disheartened and
confused. When these things occur, we become very difficult to get along
with. Irritation at the slightest things comes when we are discouraged.
Discouragement causes us to “major on minors” and “minor on majors.” When
we are discouraged, we tend to pick at little things. Had we not been so
discouraged, the little things would never have bothered us. In fact, if
we would have had the sense of mind to sit down for a moment and see what
all the fuss is about, we would surely see that the thing over which we
made so much commotion has almost no permanent significance.
Discouragement is the leading cause of breakdown in the home. When
father, mother, and/or children get discouraged, they begin to pick at one
another, the things that are objects of friction have always been there
and will probably always be there, but when we are discouraged, we can
make “minors” into “majors.” Great care must be taken that we do not
become a “nation of discouragement.” Let’s be careful!
__James A. Hinkle
The Teacher
Lord, who am I to teach the way
To little
children day by day,
So prone
myself to go astray?
I teach them knowledge,
but I know
How faint the
flicker and how low
The candles of
my knowledge glows.
I teach them
love for all mankind
And all God’s
creatures, but I find
My love comes
lagging far behind,
Lord, if I
still their guide must be,
Oh, let the
little children see
The teacher
leaning hard on thee.
