SOUTHSIDE ORACLE May 14, 2004
The Bulletin Board
Celebrating God’s Family – This Sunday is a special day for the
Southside Church as we will have for this week only a single morning worship
period. There will be no service at 8:30 a.m. Bible classes for all will
begin at 9:30 followed by a period of fellowship prior to the 11:00 o’clock
worship. At the same time we will have a children’s worship hour in the
basement. After worship we will share a meal at about 12:30 to be followed
by a congregational meeting and devotional about 2:00 p.m. There will be no
regular evening worship, but there will be a devotional at 6:00 p.m. for
those unable to be present in the morning.
Baptized – Jim Hamer was baptized last Sunday afternoon. We rejoice
with him in his decision to follow Christ.
Moved – Donna Wright has moved to Little Chute, WI. We do not have a
new address at this point, but will miss her being a part of Southside.
The Sick – Aline Sturomski is now home after her recent surgery….Ann
Tevik is recovering at home following surgery.
Southside Retreat – Those interested in going to the Southside Retreat
at Fallhall Glen on May 28-31 should sign up on the sheet on the bulletin
board. There is a choice of cabins/lodge rooms on a first come basis. See
the Alexanders for questions.
The
last Christian Workers’ Meeting until fall will be Tuesday at 9:00

In the
News
William Hinson, president of the
Confessing Movement for Conservative Methodists, suggested last week
that the Methodists should have an amicable divorce. His proposal for a
division in the Methodist Church was prompted by the homosexual issues that
have troubled the nation’s third largest denomination for three decades.
Precipitating the crisis was the
appointment of sexually active homosexual clergy in open defiance of church
law that prohibits it. The same issue has already divided the Episcopalians
and threatens the internal unity of most of the mainline Protestant
denominations. It is also related to the legal effort in contemporary
society to redefine marriage by legitimizing same sex unions.
The Methodist trauma is far more than a
struggle over the morality of homosexual practice. It goes to the question
of how we determine our ethical values. The Methodist conservatives believe
that our moral standards should be determined by the teachings of Jesus as
given to us in the Bible. The liberals, on the other hand, believe that
values change as society changes, that there are in fact no unchanging
principles of what is right and wrong. The ethics of today become a
reflection of “political correctness,” always subject to change. The
church, therefore, is to reflect the moral standards of what society has
become.
The ethical gap that the Methodists face
confronts us all. It is a gap that cannot be legitimately bridged by
compromise. There are two different value systems. They are
irreconcilable. Those of us who stand on the outside of the Methodist
dilemma need to realize that we, too, face the same conflict, currently in
society and potentially in the church. If our faith has any meaning at all,
we must be prepared to stand up for the teachings of Jesus. Truth is truth,
and it must not be offered on the altar of political
correctness.
