SOUTHSIDE ORACLE April 2, 2004
The Bulletin Board
Youth Rally Report – Our youth rally last weekend was a huge success.
Attendance was up over last year and a number of the churches represented
came from a considerable distance. About 115 were present at one session,
but the total attending was greater because different people were present at
the sessions. Our thanks to Grant Rathe for his lessons. We also thank our
young people for their part in planning the program and for the many adults
who helped in preparing meals, providing housing, and serving in other
capacities. We especially thank Daryl Miller, our youth minister, for
coordinating the entire program.
We extend our sympathy to three families that lost dear ones last week.
Those who died are:
Edwin Moore, father of Mary Brown, died last Friday of heart failure.
He had been ill for some time with several serious problems. There will be
a memorial service at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, at Max Sass Funeral Home,
4747 S. 60th St.
Paul Markowski, brother of Mike and uncle of Rick, died Monday of last
week. He was a former member of Southside.
Joe Coehoorn, father of Jim Coehoorn, preacher for the Elkhorn Church,
died last Wednesday.
The Sick – Jim Capitonoff underwent successful emergency heart
surgery last Saturday at St. Francis Hospital. He is doing very well….Gertrude
Bahn is being treated for cancer that was discovered when the physicians
were searching for the source of her severe shoulder pain….Esther
Christensen remains in rehabilitation at St. Francis Terrace….Maria
Moncada, mother of Amelia Melendez, will have eye surgery on April 7th
and Duella Thompson will have eye surgery on April 8th….Remember
them and those who have lost loved ones in your prayers.
Daylight Savings Time begins this Sunday. Come to worship an hour earlier.

“Back to Basics”
It is sometimes said that we need to “get
back to basics.” What is meant is that the Biblical fundamentals need to
have greater stress.
The validity of this statement depends on
where we are. We need to get back to basics IF we are not properly
stressing the fundamentals of the Word. Sometimes we can neglect matters
that are at the heart of the gospel message.
On the other hand, we should not
continually dwell on the basics. We are admonished, “Therefore let us leave
the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity” (Hebrews 6:1). The
disciples to whom this was first addressed had not advanced beyond first
principles and were still spiritually immature. We need instruction on how
to grow in the faith.
The key is balance in our
teaching. Teaching on fundamentals is essential, but so is instruction in
spiritual growth. One must not be neglected at the expense of the other.
