Correction – In last week’s Oracle
we stated that Monroe and Julia Hawley are the only charter members who are
still at Southside. We are sorry that we overlooked Hope Zettel who is a
resident of the Concord in Greendale.
The Christian Workers’ Meeting will be

speaking on “Reflections on Our Heritage.”
Praise and Palate will be this Sunday at

The elders and deacons meeting
will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Remember! On Sunday, May 16th we
will have a single worship service at 11:00 a.m. It will be preceded by
Bible classes at 9:30 o’clock. Several years ago we went to two morning
worship services because of crowding, but once every year or so we will put
up with the crowding in order to all be together. We will also have a
special program for the children that Sunday at the time of the worship.

The Servant Church
The most outstanding characteristic of
Jesus that made him outstanding was his servant attitude. It was his
lifestyle. He flipped the ethic of the world upside down.
The church is to be an extension of
Christ’s lifestyle and personality. Just because people know the facts about
something doesn’t mean that they know something. Jesus calls the church to
a lifestyle that is not natural. It is not natural to be a servant or to
follow the beatitudes. Servanthood is a process through which we go, not
something that just automatically happens.
Why isn’t the church more like Jesus? It
can be, but the problem of being a servant is crucifying self (Luke 14:33).
We naturally resist that.
Jesus was a great servant because he
emptied himself. He was willing to go through any suffering for the benefit
of others. Jesus was rejected. People impugned his motives. They
criticized him and yet he continued in his service to God and people. You
can’t always be popular and be a good parent or a church leader.
A Christian does not seek a title but an
opportunity. How does one get to be a servant? “He humbled himself and
became obedient” (Philippians 2:8). Tough, isn’t it?
But look at the rewards. “Wherefore God
highly exalted him and gave him a name which is above every name”
(Philippians 2:9).
When James and John quit trying to be the
focal point of the disciples, they became great leaders and a blessing to
their society. __Robert L. Jones
