The Bulletin Board

Baptized – Rhonda deBie was baptized at the second service Sunday.  (Please contact us for her address or phone number.)  We wish her God’s blessings.

Celebration Sunday will be May 16th when we will have a single combined Sunday morning worship at 11:00 a.m. instead of the usual two services.  We began two morning services a few years ago because of over-crowding, but occasionally we will all meet together.  We will also have a special children’s worship that Sunday to alleviate the space problem.  It will be wonderful to all worship together.

The Southside Youth Rally will be March 26 – 28.  The featured speaker will be Grant Rathe, youth minister for the Fairview Heights, IL church.  The program begins Friday with registration at 6:30 p.m. and will conclude following worship on Sunday.  There are sign-up sheets posted on the bulletin board for those willing and able to help in providing housing or food for visitors.  Please check them out.

From the Elders

As elders of the Southside Church, one of our major functions is to serve as the  congregation’s shepherds.  The church is made up of people, and all people have spiritual needs.  These needs may involve such diverse things as family problems, addiction, depression, or decision making.  We would like the members to know that we are available to counsel and encourage those who ask for help.  The elders regularly meet at 7:00 p.m. at the church building on the second Thursday of the month and at 4:30 p.m. on the second Sunday.  Additionally we meet at other times as the need occurs.  Anyone who wishes to meet with us can schedule an appointment with all of the elders or one or two as seems best.  The meeting can be at any time that can be mutually worked out.  Let us know if we can help.                 __The Elders

Disagreeing Without Being Disagreeable

An  art in which few are proficient is the ability to disagree without being disagreeable.

In certain fields such as politics and religion, some people have a hard time remaining friends when their views clash.  Too often an honest difference of opinion leads each disputant to conclude that the other person lacks integrity, intelligence, or honesty.  The issue at hand is lost amidst a torrent of invectives or insinuations.

Here are some practical suggestions for discussing without being disagreeable:

  1. Determine that your discussion will not adversely affect your friendship, even if it ends in disagreement.

  2. Grant the other person’s honesty and sincerity.

  3. Acknowledge the other person’s intelligence.

  4. Try to determine his point of view.  You may be closer than you think.

  5. Discuss your differences in love.

  6. When you start arguing instead of discussing, stop until you cool off.

  7. If the other person becomes angry, don’t reciprocate.

  8. Make truth rather than victory your objective.

  9. Don’t be afraid to admit you are wrong, even partially  wrong.

  10. Accept constructive criticism rather than letting it anger you.

  11. Above all, act, speak, and think as a Christian.
