If I Were Looking
for a Church Home
I’ve never searched for a church home.
I’ve interviewed for several pulpit positions, but that’s more like a job
search than it is trying to find a place to involve myself with a local
body. I do have some definite ideas about what I’d look for if I were
“church shopping”.
I’d look for a Christ centered church. A
Bible centered church and a Christ centered church may not be the same
thing. A group of people might be able to tell you that Amram and Jochebed
were the parents of Moses with the speed of lightning, but then drag their
feet when it comes to being crucified with Christ.
I’d look for a church where members love
each other – the kind of church in which members help one another, move
furniture, repair roofs, and clean out septic tanks. It would also be the
kind of church where members roam hospital corridors, serve meals to those
who have family members in the hospital, and make themselves available at
crisis times. I’d look for that kind of response because Jesus said, “All
men will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another.”
I’d look for a church that reaches beyond
its membership with the good news of the gospel and demonstrates the
authenticity of the gospel through acts of compassion. I’d want it to be a
church that becomes a haven for people who have been slapped down by life –
the poor, the divorced, the lonely, AIDS sufferers, the homeless,
alcoholics, substance abusers. I’d want it to be a church that hurts with
people who hurt because Jesus, the great physician, came to heal those who
are sick, not those who are well.
I’m not looking for a church home, but I
do want to encourage the church I love and respect to be the kind of church
I’ve described.
