The Scarlet Cord – Rahab February 26, 2023

Joshua 2:1-24

Rahab, a prostitute who may also have been an inn keeper, protected Israelite spies and thereby chose to abandon her own way of life and to embrace the God of Israel. Half of her story is found in Joshua 2; the other half is in Joshua 6. New Testament authors remember her faithfulness (Hebrews 11:31, James 2:25), and she is one of only a few women mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:5). Rahab lived in Jericho, and when the Israelites destroyed the city, only those in her house were saved; some early Christian writers therefore saw her house as standing for the church, and the scarlet cord she placed in the window (see Joshua 2) as a sign of the blood of Jesus that covers sin. Then, as now, it is only faith in the blood of Christ that saves us, covers our sin, and makes us whole.
