Worship – Celebrating God in Song 09-19-21

Ephesians 5:18-20 and Psalm 100:5

1 What is worship? 2) What are the different activities we do at a worship service and why do we do those things? For those of you with children 12 and under, these might be good questions to ask them before our 8-week worship series, which begins this Sunday (9/19). We’ll start with “Celebrating God in Song.” The text for the morning (Psalm 100) exhorts all the earth to “Make a joyful noise to the Lord” and “serve Him with gladness.” How well do the adjectives “joyful” and “gladness” describe your own attitude towards the Sunday song service? Is it possible to worship God joyfully even amid suffering and sadness? How?

Check out the interesting background behind the 1873 song “It is Well with my Soul” [The Touching Story Behind “It Is Well with My Soul” (thetabernaclechoir.org)]. Then listen to the song itself (Acappella – It is well – YouTube), along with two other songs: So Will I Lyric Video – Anthony Evans – YouTube and Andrew Peterson – Is He Worthy? – YouTube. How well do these songs bring glory to God? What differences do you notice? Do these songs move you? Why or why not? What do you like/not like about them? If you had to come up with criteria for selecting songs on Sunday, what protocol would you use? Why?

Finally, a challenge. Consider how often you worship God by singing to Him outside of corporate worship, by yourself and with your family. Let’s pray that worship would be something we hunger for, because “the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations” (Psalm 100:5).
