Approaching God in Prayer 09-26-21

Acts 2:42

Would you consider answering a reflection question and doing a prayer writing exercise suggested by Pat Quinn in his recently published book Praying in Public:

  1. Who do you know that prays effectively in public? What makes it effective?
  2. Use Colossians 1:9-14 to write a corporate prayer of adoration and supplication for Southside and/or your family. Fit it to your specific group and pray it for them in your personal prayer time. (Feel free to share if you like. What do you want to see God do at Southside?)

Prayers of adoration “reflect the beauty of his character and the essence of who we were created to be—worshippers.” Prayers of supplication bring needs before God. Quinn mentions three types of supplication: prayers to change us, prayers to change circumstances, and prayers to change everything.

This Sunday (9/26), we’ll look at prayer as one of the primary ways we approach God in worship. Hebrews 4:14-16 exhorts us come before God boldly to receive what we need when we need it. But how can we, as 21st century people, fully appreciate the role of the high priest that makes this approach possible?

We worship Him because of who He is, what He did, and what He does. We praise Him because of His faithfulness. See Psalm 100. Anybody memorized it yet?!
